Water Quality Studies

Many of RMEAs projects involve water quality sampling and analysis. Our staff have many years experience with Water Quality projects throughout the region. RMEA maintains a wide range of groundwater and surface water sampling and in-field analytical equipment.

John Rice managed and conducted a basin-wide water quality monitoring program in Teton Valley from 2003 through 2006. This study involved the frequent sampling and analysis of selected sites in Teton Basin including main-stem Teton River sites, groundwater/spring sites, and tributary stream sites both in the mountains and in Teton Valley. In addition, Mr. Rice was involved with a 50 well groundwater sampling and analysis program conducted cooperatively between Friends of the Teton River and the University of Idaho.

Katy McKinley managed and conducted various water quality projects during her tenure with IDEQ. Katy managed water quality compliance for active and inactive mining companies with the State of Idaho toxic surface water quality criteria, the State of Idaho groundwater criteria as well as providing state oversight of all sampling conducted for compliance with federal permits, including NPDES. Katy also managed and conducted water quality sampling projects at abandoned mining sites through the CERCLA Preliminary Assessment/Site Investigation program involving an entire site risk analysis of all water quality criteria (numeric and narrative) at each site including analysis of historic adit discharges and their affects on adjacent water bodies. Katy’s IDEQ experience also includes the management of watershed-wide ambient water quality monitoring projects as part of the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) process. This work included stream bank erosion inventories, stream temperature monitoring, macro invertebrate sampling, and nutrient sampling coordinated on a watershed-wide scale. Katy wrote the sediment TMDL for the Medicine Lodge watershed during her fellowship with the IDEQ and the University of Idaho, and also conducted a sensitivity and uncertainty analysis of the stream bank erosion model utilized in the TMDL process as an element to her masters thesis.

RMEA maintains a wide range of groundwater and surface water sampling and in-field analytical equipment.
